5. Hines House: the “Ark” Ocean Shores, Australia

My latest project, “The Ark”, was designed collaboratively with the owners, taking their lifestyle and preferences into every aspect of the building. From my perspective, the real magic happens as a creative act that captures the essence of the client’s way of living inside and out and the interface between the two. This has resulted in the clients reporting that the house is a joy to live in with its spacious light filled spaces and the flow of one room to another affording special framed views of the ocean in the distance.

The elevated pool surround defines the main entry to the house and acts as a beautiful reflective surface echoing the Ocean beyond. The Ark is a living expression of space and form shaping light. Spatial continuity, sweeping form and light create a sense of upliftment and the feeling of sacred space to dwell in. The design is an obvious departure from oppressive flat ceilings to soaring vaulted space which creates a natural dialogue with the sky. This and connection to the earth both in form and incorporating sustainable features and materials are fundamental to this design.
